5 Steps to Sweat-proof Makeup

The one big advantage of living in sunny Singapore is our year-round summer, which is enough reason to make us want to roll out some beach mats, bring out an ice bucket of chilled drinks for some sand and sun loving. We could definitely handle sipping chilled martinis all day.

The humidity is another story. With sweat gathering and makeup melting like ice-cream out of the freezer, looking like a chilled sun-worshipping babe is a challenge in this tropical weather. Here are 5 steps to sweat-proof your makeup, stripped down to the bare essentials.

Step 1: Protect your skin with sunscreen

Product: Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion SPF 50+ WetForce

The first and most important step to preparing for beach day is sunscreen. The Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion provides you with SPF 50+ coverage, for both your face and body – the WetForce technology is supposed to increase UVB/UVA protection after exposure to sweat or water. Added antioxidants also serve to enhance its sun protection properties. Being very water-resistant, it is ideal for a day at the beach, whether you’re there for a swim or to play Frisbee.

Step 2: Layer on tinted moisturiser

Product: BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydration Gel Cream

The problem with tinted moisturisers is that they often deliver a natural tone but fall flat as a moisturiser. While this may not provide full coverage like BB cream, it is light, smooth and moisturising, especially for those with dry skin and a dull complexion. With SPF 30 sun protection, it makes a good, lighter option in place of thicker liquid or powder foundations, adding a touch of sun-kissed glow to your complexion.

Step 3: Make a statement with your brows

Product: MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set

When going light on the make up on beach day, brows can be your key to looking put-together. The MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set is available in 6 different hues, and carries a non-greasy formula that ensures a long lasting hold even on humid days, enduring through your sweat and swim. The small and precise bristle brush applicator makes it easy to apply the formula, for tidy brows that are truly ‘on fleek’.

Step 4: Pucker up with a tinted lipbalm

Product: Fresh’s Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15

A good moisturising lip balm does a lot to prevent flaky lips. Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 is a two-in-one moisturising lip balm – there are over 10 shades of the tinted version available for those who are looking for a splash of colour. It boasts key ingredients comprising moisture-preserving sugar, nourishing precious oils, antioxidant-rich polyphenols, and essential SPF protection. The lip balm glides on with a weighty consistency, to deeply moisturise your lips, keeping it hydrated for hours in the sun.

Step 5: Complete your look with waterproof mascara

Product: Dior’s Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara

Mascara is that instant wand to make your eyes pop, and you don’t have to give it up just to prevent raccoon eyes. The Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara boosts a lash-building, strong-curling formula with similar properties to hairspray to endure even extreme waterproof wear. Designed with a curved wand to easily coat the lashes from root to tip, this mascara can hold a curl even on stick-straight lashes, and prides itself to be long lasting, even if you take a dip in the sea.

Bonus: A setting spray

Product: Urban Decay’s Chill Cooling and Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray

On days that you want to go for heavier eye makeup or bronzer, a makeup setting spray can keep you looking fresh throughout the day. Urban Decay’s Chill Cooling and Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray is a lightweight spray that holds your makeup in, making non-waterproof makeup more long lasting. Formulated with Temperature Control Technology, the spray chills the surface of your  makeup to hold your foundation, eyeshadow, blush, and concealer together for up to 12 hours. You’ll end up with that much coveted natural glow.
